Benefits Of Mushrooms

The benefits of mushrooms have slowly become more mainstream since studies have again picked up in the last few decades. Organizations like John Hopkins have continued studies into the various positive uses and therapies which mushrooms have shown great promise and results. Some of the many uses the research has shown include therapies for PTSD, depression and anxiety, addiction and abuse therapy for alcohol and nicotine as well as relief for cluster headaches which is known to be an extremely painful condition. The list below includes links to some of the articles and/or studies related to John Hopkins:

In addition there are many studies on the therapeutic uses by government agencies including the NIH: “There is evidence that mushrooms may be an effective treatment for depression and anxiety disorders. To support further research, the FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy designation for a few formulations — being studied for safety and efficacy as a medical treatment for depression.”  link to the page here>

Intro to Microdosing

What is Mushroom Microdosing?

Microdosing means that you are ingesting a ‘subthreshold’ dose of psychedelic mushrooms. This is typically one-tenth to one-twentieth of a typical recreational dose. The objective is to experience the therapeutic benefits without the full psychedelic effects, allowing you to go about your normal daily activities uninhibited.

An observational study published in Nature found that people who microdosed saw small to medium sized improvements in symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress over a 30-day follow-up, compared to those who did not. The study included 900 people who reported microdosing during the month, and a control group of 180 people who did not engage in microdosing psychedelics. Link to the study >

Benefits of Mushroom Microdosing

In a 2019 study, researchers collected the baseline measures of 93 participants. Participants were instructed to follow Fadiman’s protocol (a specific microdosing protocol) and submit daily reports. The study found a clinically significant increase in measures of connectedness, contemplation, creativity, focus, happiness, productivity, and wellbeing. Long term measures were taken after 6 weeks of microdosing. Clinically significant reductions in depression, stress, and mind wandering were sustained.

Enhanced Creativity

Many people who microdose report heightened creativity and improved problem-solving abilities. It’s believed that the altered state of consciousness actually facilitates divergent thinking and the ability to make novel connections. In other words, you may experience an increased capacity to form unconventional or innovative connections between thoughts, leading to fresh perspectives and creative solutions.

Increased Focus

Microdosing may also help improve cognitive function, leading to enhanced focus, concentration and productivity. In another 2019 study people reported lower levels of distractibility.

Mood Enhancement

Microdosing has also been associated with a positive impact on mood, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. People have reported an overall sense of wellbeing, emotional stability and improved relationships.

Neuroplasticity and Learning

Microdosing is thought to promote neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. This may enhance learning and memory consolidation, potentially benefiting academic or professional pursuits.

Spiritual Exploration

Microdosing can serve as a tool for self-reflection and spiritual exploration. People often describe a heightened sense of connectedness, introspection, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

How to Microdose Mushrooms

There are several well-known protocols that can offer you a structured routine for microdosing. We’re going to share two with you today that have a few key differences regarding how often you should be taking your doses.

What makes each of these protocols different is the number of “off” days that you have. “Off” days are when you don’t take a microdose. Generally speaking, the best protocols have 1–3 days in between doses.

Why take “off” days? Taking days off from microdosing caters to our body’s natural tolerance-building mechanisms. Rest days allow you to feel the full effects of the microdose without building up a tolerance and having the ‘up’ your dose. The two protocols we’re going to share with you are: The Fadiman Protocol and The Stamets Protocol.

The Fadiman Protocol

  • Day 1: 1st microdose
  • Day 2: Transition day (not taking anything, but residual effects are felt)
  • Day 3: Normal day (not taking a dose)
  • Day 4: 2nd microdose

This can be a helpful tool for first time microdosers as it allows you to gauge and compare the differences between when you take a dose and when you don’t. As with any protocol, you can determine how long you want to microdose for. Usually you might continue a microdosing cycle for 4–8 weeks but if you feel that you have a tolerance building, you can reset by taking a 2–4 week rest.

For example, if you take your first dose on Monday, you wouldn’t take anything on Tuesday or Wednesday. Your second dose would be on Thursday and then you would rest on Friday and Saturday. Then you would take your third dose on Sunday. Then again on Wednesday, and so on.

The Stamets Protocol

  • Days 1–4: Microdosing days
  • Days 5–7: Transition days
  • Days 8–11: Microdosing days
  • Days 12–14: Transition Days

Basically this is a 4 days on, 3 days off protocol which we have found to be a very useful protocol for long term dosing as it allows you to have periods where you can actively work towards the goals you may have especially in certain therapies, while then having a couple days off to reflect and dial in tolerance.

Considerations and Precautions around Microdosing – Individual Variability

Effects of microdosing can vary significantly. Factors such as dosage, personal biochemistry, and setting can influence your experience. It is crucial to start with low doses and carefully observe individual responses. If you’re new to psychedelics and are interested in microdosing, we recommend finding a friend or guide that can help you get started.

Tripping

Taking a larger dose than a microdose constitutes tripping. This experience can be life changing for some, and an amplifier for many of the previously mentioned therapies. However it is important to understand tripping will put you in an impaired state, and should never be done outside of a safe, secure setting where you have no reason to drive.

The importance of Set and Setting

Set and setting refers to a person’s mental/emotional state going into a trip, as well as the context and environment surrounding it. There’s no “right way” to trip, but there are best practices. You can do them recreationally at a concert or camping trip, ceremonially in a spiritual setting, or in a more clinical way, usually lying on your back the whole time with eye shades, headphones (with curated music for the experience), and someone on hand who isn’t tripping.

If you’re new to tripping, then a guide or ‘trip-sitter’ (whether that be a professional underground therapist or a close and trusted friend) is a great idea. That way, if you get to a challenging point in the trip, they can help you re-ground, remind you to breathe, and reassure you that everything is okay. It’s also helpful to set an intention: Is there something about yourself you wish to learn, or a dilemma you need new perspective on? Don’t expect full healing from one trip, but know that it can teach you things to integrate into your daily life that may help you grow and change habits.

A note of caution: If you struggle with mental unwellness (or if schizophrenia in particular runs in your family) then consider consulting a therapist before you trip. Psychedelics can trigger or exacerbate mental health problems, especially for early 20-somethings in whom certain psychiatric conditions may have yet to surface.

How long will the trip last and what will happen?

A typical trip can last between four to eight hours, depending on the person’s tolerance, size, metabolism, form of consumption, and the set and setting. It’ll take about 45 minutes for the effects to begin, and the peak usually comes around two to three hours into the trip.

What’ll happen? Every trip is radically different. During the experience, you may feel a range of emotions, in waves or even all at once. Tripping can be blissful or terrifying, euphoric or paranoid, energetic or calm. You can also feel all of the above at different points over the course of six hours. The important part to remember—through the highs and lows—is that you took “a drug” and its effects will wear off. So if it’s unpleasant then don’t worry, it will not last forever.

Visual and auditory hallucinations are normal, so don’t freak out if you start seeing colorful patterns or hearing echoes. It’s also possible to feel a variety of bodily sensations (heaviness, lightness, tingling, and especially nausea at the beginning of the trip). Some even undergo what’s known as “ego death” a process whereby activity is diminished in the brain’s default mode network. During this, you might feel an incredible sense of empathy, and a deep connection to nature or the universe. We stress the value of a guide to trip-sitter here, as ego death can sometimes feel incredibly disorienting and alarming.

When you’re tripping…

Be sure you’re in the right frame of mind. Using hallucinogens can be fun, spiritual or educational if you embrace the experience. It can also be scary, especially if you try to control rather than “roll with it.”

Avoid bad experiences. Steer clear of climbing up on things, looking in the mirror, or having sex with anyone other than a comfortable, familiar partner. These activities can have unpleasant or unexpected results.

Stick to one substance at a time. Using cannabis and alcohol while tripping can change your experience in unpredictable ways.

Stay away from the steering wheel. Your judgment and coordination may be greatly impaired.

As with any substance, like alcohol or cannabis, you must take caution to keep yourself and others safe and enjoy your trip responsibly!
